Hey look another trend that conveniently started at 1980
Good lord. We are begging for a change
It may help to find the z-score, a stat. measurement of this average, 59, from the median age of all Americans. In other words, it may be that this distance of the median age of all Americans to Congress' average is proportional to other Congress. Or, Congress is much older because Americans are.
Add term-length latency and throw out periods with major political churn due to high controversy societal pressures. Hard to do, but should be much clearer reading of the output.
In other news... In 1900, the average life expectancy in the United States was 47.3 years old. This is compared to the current life expectancy of 78.7 years.
Thats not how life expectancy works. Half of all children didn't make it to 18 in 1900. Really fucks up the average.
True. I was looking for a link that isn’t there. In fact, if you compare 1980 to 2020, infant mortality drops by over 50%, while life expectancy increases by only about 3 yrs. So life expectancy does not explain the avg age of Congress. I was wrong.
In 1980, the life expectancy at birth in the United States was 73.7 years.
Those damn 3 year old congressmen back in 1930 dragging the average down m I rite
Age and Term limits in the Senate.
Presumably, this is what happens when young people no longer feel that their elected representatives speak on their behalf - they disengage and only the older generation are left. I wonder what will happen in another 30 years?
Politics shouldn't be a career.
How do we bring that down?
No way that this will end badly for the younger generation. Old people love looking out for other people.
Shouldn't be able to write laws that you won't live to suffer through.
This is sad for any country. Yet another case for term limits. There is just minimal turnover for a majority of members and therefore no incentive to be responsive to what their electorate wants/needs vs towing the part line and enriching themselves and their families.
You can literally see the rise of career politicians.
What happened in the 80s🤔🤔
senate is 63
We’ve allowed the job to become far too lucrative. Representatives should be working the hardest job they’ve ever worked and should be eager to hand it over when they’ve had enough
