The EU is a member organisation. That's a very different situation than a federated country. The question is not whether it is forbidden but whether it is allowed and there is no provision in the constitution that allows states to secede. The Supreme Court also ruled secession unlawful.

So for any state to secede laws would need to be amended and there would need to be acquiescence from both other states and the federal government for secession to occur and with all the complexities involved that is not likely to happen.

Not true. It's not designated in the constitution & anything not designated defaults to the states. The southern secession was to keep slavery, necessitating war. Blue state secession is righteous since an adjudicated insurrectionist can't be president. Our contract, the Constitution, is void.

What is not allowed is unilateral sucession. There is nothing at all in the constitution of 1787 which would make it illegal for Congress and California to come to an agreement to go their own separate ways.
