Property taxes largely fund public education. They want to get rid of public education, so it makes sense to bait people with reduced taxes, without the public recognizing the cost.

No. It would have to be made up by increased income or sales tax, both of which impact the poor far more than the rich. Right now, property taxes are paid by property owners. Changing it would obligate renters for a portion of the tax. Corporations would LOVE not paying property taxes!

I think that renters are already paying property taxes that are baked into the rent. I'm sure that generous corporations would lower rents by the tax they are no longer paying...and the Easter Bunny will be right along to hand out free eggs.

This is correct. The rent covers all the expenses unless the owner for some reason likes taking a loss.

Some landlords will take a loss for a few years, because they know increasing market value/rental rates will offset. Plus there’s this weird tax requirement that they can’t avoid—depreciation. It’s nice while you still are eligible for it, but bites you in the 🫏 when you’re forced to “recapture” it.

There are two types of landlords. The large corporations, and the small owner, usually with 2-4 units (up to 10 or so). The small owners have usually purchased one unit at a time (or a duplex, for instance). It takes them decades for it to provide a decent income, and it is their investment 🧵

Australia use to allow you to buy a home and make a one time tax payment equal to 10 years of taxes and be exempt from any further tax as long as you owned the property. People would roll that into the loan when it was $20-$30k. That would fix the rich person avoiding taxes.

Every county and municipality would be broke and therefore dependent on the largesse (and whim) of the party and president in power. The country was set up this way on purpose. See, for example, the 10th Amendment.
