France/US trade just over 100bil a year- Can US is +1.4 trillion. you may not like it -but their downside risks to oppo US is miniscule compared to Can.. Uk still want to believe in their "special relationship" w the Americans - which is just as much bs as "American exceptionalism".
Trade with the US is going to suffer anyway because there's no appeasing the current regime, there's no benefit to accepting vassal status in the end because you'll still be punished even if you comply.
That only matters if US trade policy is in any way predictable or based on things in the external world.
the thing people/countries outside Can don't understand is that the US can do enough economic damage right now to ruin Canada and economically force us to become the 51st state - that is a real and credible threat. Carneys job is to extend that clock so we can pivot away from that dependence.
