When we were playing Rise of Tiamat we picked up a kobold. Broketail, that tagged along for a good chunk of the campaign until we made him king of his own kobold tribe after he helped us defeat a white dragon. He turned out to be quite an asset on more than one occasion. :P

Respectable PC Retired Imperial Captain. Stoner NPC Streetwise contact, who always seems to just finishing a Juba spike every time the characters meet with him. Turns out, the Captain is this guy's dealer. :-) And this is a very close inversion of the rulebook example, which the player had not read

The friendship between our war veteran wizard and our rich bard with the sheltered upbringing. These characters were allies of necessity but have genuinely come to trust and rely on each other. The inventive teamwork now is a challenge to keep up with as a DM.
