Red Thunder is an example of a genre I think is dying out: Old White Guys Write a Heinlein Juvie. I can't really think of a successful one.

Growing up Weightless maybe Old Man’s War?
I realize these are both 20+ years old.
Growing up Weightless is perfect. The only problem with Old Man's War is the question of identification with the main character. Everything else about it is perfect for the list.
I agree that it's not the right starting point for a list. But the point is, it would be nice to have a list that was more modern. A list of modern juveniles to give to people. I'm not saying copying Heinlein, just something for that ecological niche.
A Spaceship Repair Girl Supposedly Named Rachel, perhaps?
Does that really feel like a starter? I mean, ok, but not number one on the list.
I adored Stross’s Saturn’s Children, just because it’s the only one I’ve read that took the assignment seriously. It’s a fun book even as it savages Heinlein.
Saturn's Children was pretty clearly "Stross writes Friday."
Saturn's Children isn't modelled on the juvies but the later, adult Heinlein novels.
