The Germans also still had a king who had had true authoritarian power up less than a decade ago, slipping back into that was not a hard sell for people.
*And* that the different political factions were frequently engaged in armed conflict in the streets on a regular basis. There was a level of violence there that just isn't currently present in the US, no matter how much Trump wishes there were
