Ravenglass is amazing - the only coastal town or village in the Lake District national park. 🤓 But yes West Cumbria is somewhere quite unique and unknown - though obviously with parallels with places elsewhere (Cornwall? Parts of Wales?). Hence, in part, the identification of 'Workington Man'.
I dont think I am misremembering this but back in the 1960/70s there was group calling themselves the West Cumbrian Independence Army. They tried to make a bit of a splash by blowing up a pylon. However nobody seemed to notice and the dream faded.
Also here at the moment. It’s amazing! And yes quite strange…
A barman in a pub I used to go to was from Carlisle. He had many things to say about Cumbrians who came from outside the city.
Definitely. You often hear Boston fans going on about the geographical isolation of the town being an issue for the football team, but then you have Barrow! I also still dine out on doing Workington away twice in one season.
Growing up in the eden valley, everything west of Carlisle down the West side of the lakes was referred to as Weird Cumbria. Playing under 15s rugby against the likes of Millom was an experience!
Did the Whitehaven coastal path last summer, got called the worst word by a lady on a scooter. Went back to the Lakes sharpish.
Man leaves London and it's weird because of lack of infrastructure. I mean, I know, and I get your point but also - you see how this looks, right?
Yeah I spent half my life in a tiny village with no phone signal or bus or whatever so i know of what I speak!
Richmond, or Hampstead?
Trying to work out if you’re up Muncaster Fell or Newtown Knott. I think the former?
‘Interesting’ 😂
By interesting am guessing you mean really poor, gutted of shops and infrastructure, with high unemployment and illness... I used to be a magistrate over in Workington and it was a very unsettling "there but for the grace of God.." experience. Circumstance, lack of life opportunities, explain a lot.
After a long period of things generally getting better, it feels like there's been a return to decline over the past 15 year or so. Still plenty of honest, kind, friendly folk but every time I go back it feels like the town is more and more abandoned and dilapidated.
Am trying to think about what might have happened 15 years ago.... 🤔 🙂
2008 financial crash was a big tipping point as far as I recall.
To the best of my recollection we were largely insulated to that by the guarantee of 'Sellafield money' though of course everybody's experiences are different.
There's a huge divide between those getting Sellafield Money (or BAE systems money further south) and those not, though. Bit of a bimodal distribution of wealth going on
I like how everything appears to be currently subsidised by a campaign for nuclear sludge storage
Great place to be a small kid. Not a great place to be an older kid / teenager. Fortunately, I moved out at seven years old!
Oh gosh… so did I! (Many many years ago)
Barrow-in-Furness, though. God's country.
A man who knows where Egremont is speaks…
Better not be chatting shit about Workington, marra
I have shopped in the Co-op in Cleator Moor.
Expensive.
