My theory is that an attraction of religion is kind of going to the belief gym and making your faith muscles grow stronger by doing resistance training against impossible tenets. Trump is such a liar and grifter that he is a real world opportunity to see how strong your wilful ignorance has grown.

I agree this might be part of the answer. If you wholeheartedly believe in something that cannot be sensed or measured or confirmed in any way to exist, wouldn't that make you more likely to believe in other things without proof? That pump has already been primed!

It may be worse than that. Disclaimer: I am religious myself but I try to recognise when I am being asked to believe something objectively untrue e.g. wealth is a sign of virtue being rewarded by God. There is a strong temptation to believe uncritically and think that is virtuous.
