I have a pet theory that if you’re buying a house, your best bet is to get one without squeaky doors. I feel like if someone takes the time to WD40 their door hinges, they kept everything else in pretty much ship-shape.

We trusted that a home with lovingly cared for and displayed tools would be safe. The plumbing/electrical is fine, but the previous owner didn’t buy into “measure twice, cut once”. Replaced a lot of trim - none cut and set properly. Not a craftsman. 🤷‍♀️

Counter proposal. Don’t trust the non-squeaky doors, because they haven’t looked after the place and the first thing they did when they listed was WD40 the hinges because they’re so obvious. Look for a garage with a proper tool kit (that isn’t brand new) and no black mould in the bathrooms

Any house with a workbench and trim in the bathrooms that looks a.) not new, and yet b.) not warped, that’s a good’un.

Truth. I rent, but I also take pains taking care of the place. I live in and put WD-40 on all the hinges even the front gate.

I also use walnut oil on the beautiful massive front door in my 1892 flat.

In the same spirit:

A 1957 Ford Thunderbird for sale, and the photo is sideways, with the caption “If the old man didnt know how to rotate a photo before posting, you KNOW he took good care of this car.”

My dad built custom homes. His advice: homes that are cared for in the little things usually have the large stuff taken care of.

Even better if they used something other than WD-40

If the doors squeak the house is probably haunted.

In the midst of a porch enclosure (2 story porches) and discovered the roof (an extension of the house roof) ended with a post/beam support where the post wasn't tied into the beam. Depended entirely on friction and gravity.

Sorry, when we bought this house, the old appliances were only sort of working. Replaced the dishwasher and refrigerator within 6 months. And living with the dryer that doesn’t have anything bit the most basic features.

My husband likes to look at the furnace, has it been maintained or ignored? Also, what condition is the garage floor in?
