Has anyone proposed having the government cover whatever costs the health insurance companies won’t? That way, the insurance companies stay in business, and no out-of-pocket costs to consumer.

Obama tried to make even small changes to insurance (a common insurance claim form) and it failed. The lobbyists killed that. Part 2. People complained “we don’t want the government making our health decisions”. So, instead the for profit insurance companies decide what care you can have.

France has just the opposite system. The social security system covers basic services, but most of us have inexpensive supplemental insurance to cover costs that social security won’t.

The USA has the highest per capita health care costs in the OECD and yet so many people have no care or poor care. Maybe the insurance companies and pharmacy middlemen are the problem and not the solution?

That's just M4A with extra steps. Now insurance companies can scoop up premiums and copays and slowly cut down on what they cover.

Why would we want to make sure the insurance companies stay in business?

You could have Medicare for all where the govt covers certain basic services and allow for insurance companies to supplement the rest. I also think insurance can cover private doctors who dont want to participate in Medicare for all.

Yes I agree. Worked as a medical biller for 42 years. Medicare had the most comprehensive payment system in my opinion.

I'll take your word on that. All I know is that most of the doctors I've had as clients over my career hate dealing with Medicare compared to other insurance companies.

Holy fuck, let's put the big insurance companies out of business once and for all. What the hell do we owe those parasites?

HC companies have the highest profit margins of any business. They have to go. Look at every other country and learn from their single payer system and use the best ideas.

I definitely don’t, but if we can’t just get rid of them, maybe a compromise. Just a thought.

I have been in the health insurance business for 21 years this month. I assure you, there is no need or use for a health insurance company. It is pure waste.

Or better yet, cut out the middleman. They are unnecessary. Only this country has them. Insurance companies are a scam.

lol. The first thing insurance companies will do is to quit covering virtually everything. It’s a very complex problem and that idea is really terrible. Think harder and come up with something better.

There is a reason no one but the US has the US system. It doesn’t work. The US is the only high income nation without a universal healthcare system. Just pick one of the many that work all around the world and implement it already.

What you're doing is giving insurance companies the permission to cover less and less and shovel the costs onto the taxpayer. While they privatize their profits. Just get rid of them. They do literally nothing of value.

Question. Aren't taxes "out of pocket costs to consumers"? I'm not trying to be a smartass but just because we don't see it on a bill, the money still has to come from somewhere.

We could cut our health insurance costs in half if people ate right and exercised. But people would rather shove fast food in the mouths all day while watching TV and playing video games then cry how insurance companies are "screwing" them. How about the government stop subsidizing sugar?

Insurance companies are the major problem here when you can dictate what is covered if / when

UnitedHealth Group made $25.7 Billion in adjusted profit for 2024. They don't need government help making even more. There's a reason Luigi happened. They made that large adjusted profit by notoriously denying a massive amount of claims.

If we’re stuck with private insurance companies, why don’t we force them to cover everything Medicaid/Medicare/the VA would and remove the incentive to push coverage of necessary and effective treatments on to their customers?

That's pretty much exactly what the ACA does. It may not be extensive enough and enforcement may be lax, but it does specify a core set of services that providers are required to cover.

So health insurance companies cream off vast amounts of profit, but the *government* actually provides cover?? Hard to believe you've actually found a worse system.
