If Canada and other high income countries are to help the world rebuild from the American destruction of science and public health, we need to first focus on protecting our democracies from the far-right. We need to get serious about the growing extremist movements inside our countries, now.

Basically, all of science is under attack.
Unfortunately Carney is going to be our Obama.
How so?
Obama came in with a mandate to make progressive changes and ended up being a corporatist who left wall street largely unaccountable and actually bailed out those who caused a global crash with public tax dollars while doing zilch for those who lost their homes. It was a massive shift in wealth.
The first thing Carney did was eliminate an increase in taxes for the wealthy. He's giving away billions in tax dollars to corporations and is going to gut public programs proportionately.
The response will be the same. A populist conservative will come in and stimulate the right and the left will largely be depressed after having voted for someone who said he would protect Canada while selling it out to the ultra wealthy. Which, surprise, is what happens when you elect a banker.
And the story of the last 15 years isn't the rise of the far right, it's the suppression of the left. As a result the centre moves further right.
No. It's the rise of fascism which has been ongoing since Reagan. Imagine how different things would be had 90,000 Naderite tankies in Florida not put W in office in 2000 or tankies putting trump in power in 16. Elections have consequences.
Carney is much smarter than hard leftists. He actually knows how things work.
Canada is under direct attack by a fascist dictatorship. If the economy fails, Canada fails.
Had the US government not acted in 2009, we would have seen a depression that would have made the Republican Great Depression look like a walk in the park. Everything you take entirely for granted would have been destroyed. E.g. Zero social programs.

Democracy can't survive when money's the real power. Corporate interests and billionaires bankroll the far-right, distorting elections and policies. We’re trying to protect democracy while its enemies use $ as a weapon. Until we tackle money in politics, all the talk of defense is just empty noise.🇨🇦
Everything is downstream of the media/info environment and we are not doing anything to fix that. We subsidize US right wing owned media to propagandize our own population - that is how stupid we are. Our best hope is that, like in 2008, the US implodes before we do and we can get clear.
