I am currently reading The Complete Memoirs Of Ulysses S. Grant and am pleased to report the Republic has been this fucked before and survived. 🧐 🇺🇸
I am currently reading The Complete Memoirs Of Ulysses S. Grant and am pleased to report the Republic has been this fucked before and survived. 🧐 🇺🇸
My mother-in-law lived thru #WWII in #France, this too will pass. But its gonna get ugly
We are going to survive, but America will have changed. It’s our third act, middle of our book. Full of villains and monsters and a few hero’s. Let’s be hero’s.
But they didn't have X.
Or Fox. But also, we have modern medicine. They didn't have anesthesia and had to endure amputations. That might be a tangent, I'm sorry.
this time can we actually do reconstruction right? 🔥 🔥
And yet, we never truly recovered from that episode. White supremacists are still active and the super-rich still feel entitled to run everything.
That book was written in Upstate New York, about 50 miles from my home.
Is that the one where he walks around Dublin for a day
Boy I hope that's true!
Any lowlights to cheer us up. I got about 1/3 of the way through and Grant was still building his own Hard Scrabble house
I have this book queued up next myself!
I don’t know how we unfuck ourselves now that there is billionaire control of mass media and social media. And I see no plans on how to change that.
I thought the same when I read a bio of Grant back in 2017 or so.
Reading about HUAC and McCarthy one comes to the same conclusion, but but but..
Very encouraging!
It has. While I’m not thrilled majority decided to take this route I am fully aware what’s coming is survivable. While I know I’ll be okay, many people are not gonna handle this environment well.
Humanity does tend to have the same problems on repeat.
Because we are irredeemably stupid
I used to believe/hope human nature could change, could evolve to something higher. Right now, that is not what I am believing.
Everything is cyclical, except powered wigs, they never came back.
We could bring 'em back.
😳
Why is that shocking? I was just joking.
No,no, I understood. 🤣 That was the best “oh God I don’t wanna wear one of them if they come back“ looks.
🤣🤣 idk, I’d like to think I could make it work. 🤣 I wonder why they wore those things. And also didn’t the men use a lot of makeup? Idk.
If I am correct, it had something to do with lice or something along that line. They just kept their head shaved and wore wigs all the time. I could be wrong, but if not, that’s your history lesson for the day! 😂
They smelled so bad. They attracted lice but these are why they wore them. status, health, sun, vanity, hair loss
Yet.
Now, that would be the icing on the cake of this administration! Powdered wigs on the lot of them would probably improve their image…
One person would be especially improved by a less bottle blond coif.
Almost made it. The fight never really ended. It’s still not over and going backward at warp speed.
Ken Burns says we've never really resolved the Civil War.
Yes exactly.
Tell me. Because i don’t go quietly.
Fascism didn’t exist when Grant was alive. The only reason we exist after it was invested is because our grandparents gave their lives to ensure it never came to America. I hope they haunt their descendants who voted for this.
With digital spying? Drones? Robots?
Yeah, I was thinking that DJT and USG belong in the same category. Big difference--USG was an honest man and wrote his memoirs while dying to ensure his family was not destitute after his demise. The USG is less memorable than Hoover's, which had the Great Depression as a historical marker.
I’ve been meaning to read them. Been sitting on my bookshelf for months. About as good a time as ever.
Little reminders like this make me feel a little better…a little. 🙂↕️
Hope springs eternal!
Not without a lot of blood shed.
I find reading history right now really does help with that hope piece of this nightmare. Reminding me of who had it worse, to also remind me that the horror didn’t last infinitely- And to remind myself it required some level of fight by masses each time ✌️
Has it, though?
Not like what’s about to happen. Not even close.
You really think you’re living through some kind of massive historically significant and negative moment You guys need to chill 🤣
Please, enlighten me.
How on earth to explain the last 10 years? You guys made all sorts of crazy claims about Trump in 2016. None of that came true. Why would 2024 be different? You’ve spent this whole time running away from imaginary Nazis. It’s been incredibly bizarre!
I admire your optimism. They never had the press before did they?
Read "The Soul of America" by Jon Meacham too
Thank you. 🙏
I really don’t think there is any real equivalency. History does tend to repeat itself and at this point not for the better. I am reading Doris Kearns Godwin’s An Unfinished Love Story about the 1960’s. I think here is more equivalency and what I am seeing is a return to the dark old days.
Grant was just a drunk! Trump has much more to add to that résumé!
I don’t think with something this demented disgusting and mentally incompetent!
I know we will survive this, but at what cost?
Issue being is the Union lost the peace. They should have said "since you tried to secede, we've gone over this whole 'electoral college' setup, and we're gonna go straight up with population. Sorry, you don't get to keep your 'black people get to boost our electors but can't vote' crap."
We have gone through some horrible times, true.
Hmm I’ve been wanting to read that
tbh, it was way more fucked during the Civil War since it actually broke apart lol.
History definitely repeats itself - we are coming around WWII era now so hold on tight
Was UG a good guy in this? (I know he led northern forces in the Civil war)
That was a long long barely edited read
Yeah a lot of people don’t seem to remember his Presidency as basically him and a bunch of other drunk dudes blatantly stealing and being incompetent. Big difference though here is that Trump has access to nukes.
I'm comforted by the knowledge that he is safeguarded from indiscriminately launching said nukes. But I get your point.
It always does somehow. Good leaders are on the way in our future.
But did billionaires control the “news?”
Have you read Hamilton? I was stunned by how little things have changed.
Good suggestion. Thanks. 🙏
Between it and the musical, you'll get a lot of questions right on jeopardy. :)
1876 by Gore Vidal is a good read on how the republicans stole the election and help to Prematurely end Reconstruction ushering in The Jim Crow era.
Great perspective
In a civil war group and heard a report on that! Timely!
Yes, but then we had Lincoln, Seward, Stanton, Grant & Sherman. And the anti-slavery forces in Congress. Plus Grant & Sherman (among others) leading the fight. Now?
🤞🤞🇺🇸💙
That's such a good read, and the circumstances surrounding its inception and publication are fascinating, too. Mark Twain was *begging* Grant to publish them.
Thank you, I needed this reminder
Ah, but the country didn't have Twitter/X and Russian hackers/bots back then, now did it?!? The momentum has changed...
600,000 people died to bring us back from that precipice. I’m not all that sure I’d want to repeat the experience
I’m sure I don’t.
Yes, but at what cost. I'd prefer my children not have to live in a hellscape before we as a nation can get our shit together again.
How many, many times did I say this about reconstruction. Grant was something else. And, I'll always contend, when Reconstruction went craaay-z, it set this all in place. No healing, no read reconstruction. Here we are, an outgrowth of that.
Is this the one that Mark Twain published? I read Ron Chernow's book on Ulysses S. Grant and it was fascinating. I finished 500 pages in 3 days which covered the civil war. The second half took a little longer covering his presidency and reconstruction. All fascinating though...
How? Speak slowly and use simple words.
What percentage of the population died?
this is oddly comforting to read. thank you so much for this! i really needed it.
"Thank God for that!..."
But so did the ideologies that keep fucking it up
Not to be Debbie Downer…but - we didn’t have the issues from external forces (Russia/China) like we do today. Europe basically sat the war out without choosing sides. Also - no nukes in 1866.
One of the more underrated presidents imo. Simply too trusting of his friends and not a great political mind but a fine leader.
I like the way you processed your findings.
Really? But we didn't have all powerful billionaires then..
Grant wrote the best, most direct memos.
1. Good book 2. You are correct!
Thank you for the reassurance...it's truly needed...I keep thinking it's just for years...but the effects from those four years will last for years... maybe decades.
thanks for the tip. just went to amazon and loaded it to my kindle.
We survived, but African Americans never recovered from the policies of Andrew Johnson, don't you think?
100%
But not unscathed.
Next watch PBS series on the Reconstruction. It’ll bolster that opinion. pbs.org/show/reconst...
Just need another Fighting Irish Brigade to hold the line at Gettysburg. 😆
I needed to read this today
Yes but over a half a million people died in about four years before things started to get better. 🤷🏻♂️
Read David Corn's American Psychosis to get the full spectrum of lunacy we've experienced throughout our history. I have no idea if it will confer a sense of relief or sheer terror.
I find everything so schizophrenic presently it will probably bring both. Thank you, Jon. 🙏
Yay? Lol. You know what, I'll take it. Any hope is welcome.
Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but 620,000 - 750,000 people didn't survive the Civil War, or 2% of the population. In today's bodies that would be about 6.9 million people. Plus, you have to consider in the Civil War, they only had muskets, cannonballs, and bayonets.
Fascinating life he led. Also, holy shit the things that happened post civil war 😳
I was helping my son with a world history class (which I'm sure at some point I took in high school but is infinitely more interesting now). To read about history repeating itself over & over & over is really mind boggling
This is worse.
No it is not.
Good to know
Yeah, and 2% of the population died. This would be over 6 million in today’s world. We’re not in a good place
Exactly right! It only took about 130 years to circle back there. They say history repeats itself. Maybe the Hoover years are coming up and they’ll be a Roosevelt out there. A Teddy or FDR type - doesn’t matter, either will work!
That is some good news. Lol
I needed to hear this — this is oddly reassuring.
New here. Love this reassuring piece of joy. You’re my official first Following.
Feeling much better now 🙏🏽
Question is how long it will take And will a lot of blood be shed
But with a hangover that we're still suffering from.
But they didn't have Social Media, instant communication across many platforms and all the expertise in Marketing (lying) that politicians have today. Hell, they didn't even have radio!
Read Michael Harriot Black AF History The Un-Whitewashed story of America
I'm waiting for our John Brown.
I've read them too. The difference being Lincoln beat MacLellan because the insurrectionists weren't allowed to vote.
Well, this is the good news I came here for.
Next you should read the works of Jefferson Davis, a highly intelligent man.
😳
Well, no. Back then the oligarchs didn’t own all the media / news outlets and citizens united had yet to kick in. Were fucked.
Well that's encouraging... a little
Because of men
Let’s hope.
Always fascinating to read up on the 1876 election and realize that time is a flat circle
Legend says Mark Twain really got on his case to write that multivolume book.
Hope floats
Small blessings.
Skip to the part where we get the magic beans and tell us where to plant them.
True. And there were guardrails then that don't exist today. Look at the effects of Citizens United, for example.
After a war. It was the same problem then. filthy rich people with to much power.
Very hopeful news!! Thx!!
Ya but would be nice if we didn't have to slap these losers down over and over
Agreed. Ron Chernow's "Grant" is fantastic and shocking, especially the chapters on Reconstruction. We will get through this!
This is more optimistic. I was in full doom and gloom.
After a civil war.
🇺🇲💔😥
Let’s never underestimate the power of the people! Fuck The 2%
I recommend the podcast Totalus Rankium: American Presidents for the same reason: it has always been like this. But that doesn’t mean sit back and wait, either.
@totalusrankium.bsky.social
That’s great. The thing is, we don’t want to have to keep trying to “survive” every time a new Republican president comes in.
Yay
Not everyone survived Dave
I pray for the downfall of the American imperial military
Grant is an ancestor of mine. His mother and my 5th or 6th great grandmother were sisters
That is really cool.
Thanks
I keep telling myself this. Not sure it’s working.
I would hate to see another half million people die to keep it together.
Recently read The Bully Pulpit about Roosevelt and the muckrakers at the turn of the 20th Century and made me feel better for the same reason. Every generation has to fight for democracy and opportunity. And every generation forgets.
I imagine Teddy rolling in his grave at the idea of the billionaire class running the country, but you're right.
Thank you.
I'm reading "The Demon of Unrest" by Erik Larson, and I'm coming to a similar conclusion.
Thank you! 🙏
Well, that is somewhat of a comfort. Thank you. 🫶🏻
History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. ~ Mark Twain (maybe)
By its President?
🩵
Gore Vidal considered it one of the best autobiographies ever written. It is powerful and beautiful, albeit as you indicate, a dire subject.
Four generations of African-Americans who languished under Jim Crow beg to differ.
Founding Brothers and His Majesty are also great. The nation has been hanging by a thread since inception really. That’s the beauty of it.
Does he mention a woman named Sarah Bowman?
Not yet, but I'm early in the reading.
Please let me know. If you remember to. If you want to know her story, I can send you my script lol She was a wild lady! Sarah didn't tame the Wild West. She kicked its ass. 😎
Funny, I'm reading "Willie T" Sherman's memoirs (Library of America) and thinking things could be worse.
Let me know when we have gone beyond this fucked please.
I read that book in the early 2000s. I am not so sure we will survive this time.
Still not excited for these next four years 😭😭😭
good read but that wasn’t anywhere near my main takeaway from reading it
Great book, and an exceptionally important American. I live about ten blocks south of his memorial in NYC.
You’re being over-optimistic.
This is what I keep telling my friends and family!
I’m reading this too.
I still think reconstruction was a complete and utter failure example in musk land before the election the number of far right people from the Deep South advocating for secession was obscene
Well Reconstruction was never completed. It was upended. Those fuckers always want out. They'd rather live separately in a sovereign land than live peacefully under a D admin. Bonkers. But also, I'd rather live separately in a sovereign land then live in their hellscape of autocracy. Sooooo...
They had Lincoln. We have…
A deep bench. Believe it, we do. Among them are California Gov. Gavin Newsom; Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker; Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear; Maryland Gov. Wes Moore; Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer; North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper; Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro; Georgia Sen. Raphael ..
Warnock; New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker; Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman; California Rep. Ro Khanna; and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. And there are others. This list is from an ABC News story. I'm sure there are even more. Deep bench. I like our chances.
Thank goodness!
I dunno. Social media & cyber hacking did not exist then.
The south still thinks the civil war is ongoing. Their (lack of) education systems encourages this way of thinking.
This is why I read history.
No, back then we did NOT have an elected DICTATOR MORON who is hell bent on destroying the United States!
I've been fascinated by Lincoln. Currently reading And There Was Light by Jon Meacham
We need Jon on this app!
They didn't have the internet, though
I live in the Missouri Ozarks and the South needs a little blue pill to rise again. It's gettin' there!
But back then the ones you/we were rooting for were in charge…
Good to know ! It is the cruelty that I don't like !
There are many things that need to be done. We have entered a conservative time where people think the 1950's were a good time socially and social control was expected.
Today, even the Catholic seminaries are filled with young men who parade around in cassockd and liturgical garb, waiting to tell their "flocks" how to think and behave. We need a Renaissance of new ideas, with new thinking and new people, honoring American intellect.
That takes time to grow again from the ashes of the dark time we are in. We are entering a time of great struggle and suffering, but that is where there is rebirth. It will take generations.
Adding this to my TBR
Sure, but 3% of the population died. That would be 11 million people today.
Watching the Burns Doc on prohibition. Holy corrupt...
Let’s hope that just as everything is moving at warp speed in our lives, so too will our recovery from this horror.
He was also kinda hot 🤷♂️
We’re supposed to learn from history and not repeat mistakes.
Phew 😏
Yes, but were there two nuclear armed wannabe superpowers hedging for world domination in the wings?
The Republic will, perhaps, survive. Inertia is a hell of a drug. Lots of Black, Brown, and Queer folk will not.
“At least the republic will probably survive” I say as they execute my ass for being gay
Grant was so important to our Democracy
Never when a Party held a “Superfecta”. Sorry, it’s just reality that this is not going to end well. Especially when the base of said Party is all in on the Doomsday ending.
Except the insurrection succeeded this time.
Although we didn't then have multibillionaire "global citizens" pushing lies 24/7.
Yes but without nuclear weapons
I was amazed at his writing skills, particularly as he was in such pain from throat (I believe) cancer. The first time I read it, I wasn’t sure what I’d find.
My dad was a Dutch high school exchange student in the US in 1968. He told me it was worse back then.
Thanks. I needed to hear this.
💙💙
Yeah but a lot of people died and society is still suffering from the repercussions :/
Lincoln should have let the CSA go: the USA would be better today and the CSA would be a third-world country.
Ok, there’s that…
This time we finish reconstruction and let the traitors finish their terms 6 feet under.
It is the height of lunacy that Joe Biden and the military would actually stand by, normalize Trump, and let a traitor and insurrectionist take over our country. Jack Smith has the proof that Trump is a traitor and insurrectionist, and our generals should throw Trump in the brig. Hello Prez Vance.
Biggest regret is that Jefferson Davis wasn't hung for the entire country to see
Listen I say the mistake was letting those traitors live
Gonna need guns. A lot of 'em.
THIS!!
Collapse driven by climate change / overshoot is the different factor. It changes the future prognosis entirely, as well as explaining what's driving a lot of what's happening now.
Great writer.
Do we have to go through Jim Crow again for another 100 years before it gets good again?
