"Slovak but not Slovak enough to get citizenship by descent because when my g-g-grandparents came over, it was still the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But I am neither Hungarian nor Austrian." ("SLOVAK!" my grandmother hissed to me. "Not Czech. SLOVAK.")

Similar but grandparents came from Moravia. Identified as Bohemian. But were Austrian citizens when they arrived in the states. I asked my father if we were Czechoslovakian. No, American. But what nationality? Bohemian. Jak se mas?
I somehow am also neither Hungarian nor Austrian, while my g-grandparents came from Hungary & their village is now in Austria & they spoke German. Empire is a mess!
I was Czecheslovakian as my grandma's family came from opposite ends of the country. Took me a while to even realise we qualified as Slovak because that wasnt how she framed it 😅 I believe her heritage was Moravian and Hungarian essentially?
If your ancestors came after 1904, I think, you might be able to get an EU passport. Mine did not. :(
oof I should check. I think we were late 1800s though. My wife, OTOH, was 1920ish.
Well get that Slovak passport! And sew some gold coins into the hem of your coats just saying.
