I think they are using him as their figurehead to cover for their crimes against democracy, performing them more openly and at a speedier clip. Without the figurehead they may slow down but will continue on. Not unlike trying to treat a cancer unsuccessfully, only to have it come roaring back.

Many dictators don't have successors because they are real dictators. Trump is just a wannabe dictator put there by the Heritage Foundation. They already have his succession arranged.
