I'm in the, "eat your vegetables" part of my story where what's happening isn't as exciting as what is to come and so I'm not having fun. Let me ask, how do my fellow writers get through that wall? How do you, "eat your vegetables"? #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #bvm #SFF #amwriting #BookSky #Fantasy

I try to have fun with the inter-character dynamics during those parts of the story. They may be checking boxes to do what they have to do, but I'm going to throw tiny spanners into their path that send them catapulting into each other all the time.

That sounds pretty interesting. Do you have a snippet as an example? If you want to share one of course.

I’ll have a look tomorrow am and share (camping in a field right now 😂 but I have my laptop to post in the morning). But I have one scene especially in mind. My sci-fi crew has to do a risky, technical “switch the transponder” job, but I use the scene to have my characters interact in a way

That makes my MC uncomfortable. He’s a massive unreliable narrator and thinks he’s a POS who doesn’t deserve a second chance. His exwife and former crew don’t think so, and he spends the whole time avoiding her glances and trying to joke his way out of feeling uncomfortable.

Yeah I can get that. I'll definitely check it out once you get a chance to drop it.

I try to keep it brief and moving along. If I'm bored, I worry the reader will be too. I can always go back and flesh it out later if it feels rushed, but I just try to speed through it with the narration at first.

With great difficulty & usually over several months 😫 For me the only way is just to force myself to push through no matter how bad I fear it might be. And also skip parts! If I'm bored I figure the reader might be bored, so time skips when I can help move things along.

This sounds a lot like how I end up handling it. Just hammer away until it gets in the right shape. Maybe I will time skip soon.

I give myself permission to write terribly. I call it "And then" writing. It's basically just a list of what's happening. Dialogue tags minimal, placeholder brackets aplenty. Bc I'm finding if it's boring, I'm going to end up reworking it a lot, so I'm just sketching it in for myself for now

I definitely can understand the sketching concept.

Hmm, I like to metaphorically smother them in butter and cheese (mix in some fun parts to keep interest up).
