Say a national referendum on a new constitution passes narrowly, 53 -47 with 60% turnout. What effect so you suppose that would have? I think at minimum it would force a new political settlement with some rule changes

I don’t think there is a practical plan as of yet. You’re describing the same turnout and results that voted in Biden in 2020, the greatest turnout in history. And let’s say from some quick napkin math, 47% of his supporters identify as centrists. Do you think that’s a coalition that does this?

Pragmatically, it’s either going to take an unprecedented unbroken political movement that will last decades, pack the court, hammer home laws, and never lose any supporters, nothing that happens in any near term. Or some form of revolution. I don’t think there’s a smooth middle road.

Furthermore, the rules today is that it takes 2/3 of both houses and 3/4 of state legislators to amend the constitution. Or 2/3 of state legislators to call a convention (today we are closer to the bad side getting this done). How do you think the 40% that staunchly oppose us would feel?

That is in and of itself a revolution and there would absolutely be blood if 47-53% of the population through some magical process took over the nation. Which I’d support, mind you.

I actually do think you could get 70% on a bare 'the current system is broken and needs to be replaced' proposal. What the actual replacement is would be another matter. Again though, the GOP is not bound by the constitution. The rest of us should not pretend like we are either

Completely agree with you there. Again I don’t disagree with you about what you want or what the GOP has done and how non functional the system is. And I love hope. But I see big accounts talking about how we must get dems to jail the GOP now. That will not happen without blood, or decades.
