I had a flag that was tattered and wasn't sure what to do with it. I asked a friend who had recently retired from the army what my options were. He told me it was ok to burn a flag and that what was required was it be done respectfully

Yes, in fact at the PS air museum there is a container where people can drop off old, damaged flags to be destroyed properly, respectfully by burning them
