I admit to having paid 0 attention to the Lib Dems for a long time. But anything that moves us back towards Europe that Europe will support is ok by me

I wondered if it suffered from the same problem of assuming that the EU will do what’s good for the UK, though it seems like a win-win from their perspective too. The Lib Dems should really make the case for rejoining the SM, and ultimately the EU, though.

This is it - Europe has to be on board with any proposal. Part of the UK party’s problem is then that they are letting the EU dictate their policy. Which they have to. But is a bad look.
