Yeah, it’s definitely time to get this back into the discussion. Labour has just accepted the ‘Europe bad’ framing and its 🙄🙄

Labour’s main problem IMHO is the dramatic contraction of the UK economy post-Brexit. Unless they can get the economy moving again then they can’t do a lot of other things, and taxes will have to rise again. Europe is the main source of potential growth.
It's just incredible how much of the last ~15 years of UK politics has been dictated by fear of that toad-faced twat Farage. And it's still happening. Closer ties with Europe is just patently obviously the single best thing we could do for the economy and yet... here we are. 🤷🏼♂️
Indeed. Astonishing how much prominence he and the small (but vocal) minority he represents have been given in the national debate. But then the right-wing press, and latterly broadcast media, have been poisoning the well for decades.
It’s also just a theme across the world - the right sets the terms of the debate and the left bends over backwards to accept the framing. Then you get people like Ardern and AOC who have clear goals and values and people resonate to it, but no one learns the lesson. Drives me mad
So yeah, someone saying out loud that EU membership of some kind is simply a good idea would be nice
Yep. What’s up with that?
Media controlled by right-wing old men who don't like paying taxes.
I mean yes, but also I feel like this is tapping some value in left wing politics. Like, they’re trying to make sure people feel heard and it’s turned into not being forceful enough to control the narrative
But maybe it is just Fox News etc. Definitely an option
Bingo!
Public opinion is now in favour of rejoining, but only under the original terms which includes an opt-out from the euro, annual rebate, etc. That’s not going to happen. And rejoining the SM brings with it many things to which Brexiteers object: freedom of movement, regulatory alignment, etc…
Economically it’s a no-brainer, but politically still unacceptable as it would fracture Labour’s electoral coalition (though that seems to be largely dissolved now anyway). Skilful leadership would be required to steer people back towards the EU, which sadly I can’t see happening any soon.
