Do it! There is a site where you can barter work for room and board as well as a little money. When we went on tour there a few years ago I met all kinds of Americans doing it. Only downside is what do you do with your cars

My main issue is I won’t leave my cats behind so I’d need a place where I can live with them comfortably. Doing hostel-like housing wouldn’t really work for me.

There is a boat cat sanctuary in Amsterdam maybe they can stay there while you stay in a hostel. You just go visit them on a boat. They may have it way better than you tho.
