There's something sterile and anodyne about that cleanliness, though. Feels like the growth has all been in tech and finance.

I work in tech, as do most of my friends, so I have some severe sampling bias here, but I assume this is because that actually is where the growth has been. Maybe there has been other stuff, but Boston, where I grew up, has been doing tech (computer, but also bio) for the past couple decades.
