I've become far more conscious of this. We are just back from Scotland and for the 1st time in about 10 years we stayed in a hotel rather than AirBnB or VRBO.

Two horrible AirBnB experiences, three years apart, quickly convinced me that quality hotels are the holiday place for me. Unfortunately, I find it challenging to locate good hotels in the UK for less than £400 a night. The rooms are often tiny and stuffy. Definitely not disability friendly.

It helps that we avoid the cities. We most often stay in smallish towns like Rye, Hebden Bridge or Stratton. We always rent a car and as long as the room is clean and bright it’s acceptable. We spend little time in it anyways!

Rye and Stratton are both wonderful places. I usually stay in City centres (London, Bath, Manchester, Edinburgh) because I love museums, art and theatre. Parking is impossible in most cities, so I take cabs, or use public transport.

Just back from Edinburgh (my nephew obtained his master's degree from the uni there) and stayed in a lovely boutique hotel on the royal mile. I'm a Canadian anglophile and are no sooner home than planning the next visit l!

Never done an AirBnB. Now never will. Because Besoz (soz, Bezos) owns it. Or has a big stake in it and profits hugely. But I did once find a house swap thingy online in the good old days of the world wide web. And owners looking for house sitters for (for example) their pets and plants while away.

House swaps can be terrific. Best idea of all. One can still rent a holiday home through reputable agencies, but as I'm opposed to anyone owning more than one home at a time, it's a hotel or house trade for me.

Very much like the film The Holiday. But the trade of palatial Californian luxury for old, cramped, cold, nothing works properly is somewhat imbalanced. In reality, few have a Jude Law to throw in to sweeten the exchange.

OK, a damp bedsit in Oldham, and I can throw in a second-hand Tim Curry?

Sorry. Twice. Firstly for the library book. Secondly for presenting such a mental image. Some stuff you can't unimagine.
