Ok here's a tepid take that nobody wants but it's the truth: Mamdani is a smart, charismatic guy who seems to have his heart in the right place and lacks experience. Maybe he'll be a good mayor. Maybe he won't. There's never been a good NYC mayor in my lifetime. Seems like a tough job.

I understand, and I haven’t seen any details on how he will accomplish his promises. But we have to try something new. The old system cannot compete against this reign of cruelty.

Doing something for the right reasons is often how people rise to the challenge and excel despite no experience. Because they're fighting for making something better, they're driven on doing the right thing, less likely to take shortcuts or be corrupted by the system they want to improve.

And then surrounding yourself with a cabinet of qualified people hired to fill the positions around you for their jobs. City Controller, City Manager, Police Chief, all the other necessary positions to run the departments. Getting a cohesive team with the same vision that works well together.

I was always taught that you want to be the least intelligent in a room. This isn't to say to stay stupid, but to surround yourself with even smarter people. A successful leader is just the 'orchestra conductor', and the people you have on your team are actually the ones 'making music'.

Agreed. He needs to surround himself with seasoned, tough people he trusts who know how things operate in NYC government - and he needs to be willing to listen to them. I wish him well. Not a job I would ever want.

Sure it seems like a tough job but I don’t think Bloomberg and Adams were actually trying to make New York better for the people who live there. I think they accomplished what they basically wanted to

It’s probably impossible to be a “good” NYC mayor who makes everyone happy, from the billionaires on Park Ave to the squeegee guy waiting at red lights. But NYC has had far more mayors who prioritize the wealthy & privileged vs. mayors who look out for the working class & look where we are.

The experience of the office is the experience of the Mayor’s team. Mamdani looks to be a leader and will assemble a team (like Lander) with whom he will lead. Far preferable to the “only I can fix it” BS we get from the Cuomo-style pols of the world.

To be in the same ballpark of 'good' NYC mayor one has to be a good manager and good advocate for those who don't have doormen, drivers and nannies. While there's only so much he can go as mayor - much of what he campaigned on requires NYS legislative approval - I applaud his drive & effort.
