Generally, in socialism, it's essential sectors that govt controls - utilities, transportation, etc - so that citizens aren't gouged by corporations. Govts run these entities to provide them at cost to citizens. Otherwise, socialism isn't about owning private companies - that is communism.

Communism: the state owns everything. There are no private companies. Socialism: the state has a stake in or controls some companies deemed in the public interest. Democratic socialism: socialism in co-existence with a market economy. Economic practice, not politics.
