I think part of the problem for me was that I had lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a number of years, and was accustomed to a fairly broad outlook on the world, but I found many of my Powell's co-workers to be rather narrow-minded (even though they regarded themselves as hipsters).

Yes, most places in the US are a hard comedown culture- and people-wise after the Bay Area—when really, the mix found there perfectly illustrates the supposed American ideal: the melting pot, etc.
