I’m a dog guy, but if I were ever going to have a cat, it would be a Maine Coon. They remind me of my grandfather’s barn cats in Vermont. At least physically.

We have one that's a year old. He's over 15 lbs. His sister is 18 lbs. They keep growing until 2 to 3 years old we're told. They're not even purebreds, so I assume the purebreds can get even bigger.

Mine never got over 12 lbs, but he walked like King of the Jungle and ruled the house, training 3 dogs during his 18 years.

The one I had when I was a kid was 26 lbs, but usually they are about 12-20 lbs.

Orange are quite common. Interesting fact, they can be any colour combination except seal point. Seal point is considered a genetic impurity. We have a MC with seal point markings and handsome as he is, we can't enter him in cat shows as a purebred Maine Coon due to his colouring.

We've had a total of 4 dogs that have lived aboard with us. Three have passed and we have one rescue. Even though our boat is almost 50 feet there is really no place for a cat box. Our current rescue has a very high prey drive so it would be a no go to have a cat with him.

For real. I got mine at a shelter as a kitten that was listed as a “domestic shorthair” despite the fluff. 😂 I didn’t know I was getting a bonus MC who turned out to be just the best cat in the world.

(I’m pretty sure he wasn’t purebred, hence being on the shelter market as a basic tabby-ish mutt, but his MC traits and beauty sure emerged fast…)

My ginger Maine Coon mix, Mischief, is the smartest cat I've ever known. I didn't know anything about Maine Coons before I adopted him, but they are the most wonderful cats! Mischief is confident, friendly, funny, loving, devious, and definitely full of mischief!

I don’t even think he was purebred (got him at a shelter). I didn’t know a thing about MCs until vets started pointing stuff out to me when he was older. His markings, fur, ears and personality were all MC, and zero regrets about that happy accident.
