I sometimes wonder how, as people who believe in non-coercive forms of governance, deal with the reality that the average person believes all sorts of wacky shit and acts on it

I have no idea how to legislate against insane self destruction in a free society. The conception of freedom would have to change. It disturbs me that we continue to tolerate delusional beliefs.
