I mean, it makes money for the treasury. So that's one reason to start with.

Right its perfectly fine to constantly tax the poor for the treasury. 💀 You know we used to behead kings for that right? Slight tax increase and we rolled out a guillotine. Treasurers constantly pocket money and transfer it. The system is fucked and you're sitting here saying "business as usual".

"The poor" are not affected by any of this. If you're gifting or leaving that kind of sum, by definition you're not poor.

A lot of poor people save money for their children so they can leave them something when they die. Especially parents that know they won't live long. If I remember correctly, any gift over 1k in value gets taxed. Might be higher. A car for example. You'll be taxed due to the worth.

A married couple can leave £1M tax-free. If you retire with £1M in assets you're not poor. If you still have £1M after some years of retirement, you're definitely not poor.

Their kids will get taxed on that million. If they live frugally and place it in a savings they can definitely leave 1 million. What you seem to not realize is how QUICK a million dollars can run out. Paying off debts, college for the kids, rent, hospital stays. A mill goes far but not for long.

Dollars? Are we talking at cross purposes about different tax regimes? If you save £1M in you're lifetime you're *way* above average in the UK. Not "poor".

The family can still be poor??? That million gets split between family members and gets burnt through FAST. Even 1 kid getting the full amount, it's not exactly "quit your job" money.

You don't seem to know what poor means. Genuinely poor people in the UK retire with no savings and no property. Average net assets, including property, at 65 are under £600k. A £500k fund at age 60 would allow you to retire with a drawdown income described by the PLSA as "comfortable"

Wealthy parents doesn't make you wealthy. A family can be poor but have well off parents. Most people have debt.

If you inherit £1,000,000 you become wealthy. Most people in Britain earn less than £40k/yr gross. £1M is well over 20 years of gross income.

£3000 *per year* tax-free. Which you can roll over into a second year. Or if you know you're dying soon, leave it in your will instead.

In the will it's still taxed which is the problem. If your parents just died, you shouldn't get pre-taxed on the money that's most likely just gonna barely cover the cost of burying them. When spending the money they'll be taxed already so it's not like that money will never get taxed.

In the will it's only taxed if it's over ONE MILLION POUNDS. So it doesn't affect people who aren't wealthy.

Further "the poor" never beheaded any kings. It was always aristo-on-aristo.

Indeed, inheritance tax is a systematic transfer of wealth from rich to poor.
