What the AI is doing is called confabulation, it's a symptom of dementia. Making something up then confidently telling you it's true, even if the statement is rife with contradictions.

But it has no mind or self—so it’s more like an automaton sticking a claw in the jar and mixing things around via algorithm and then there’s something unexpected in the jar but they cannot recognize it because they have no senses or capacity to check if it’s the right thing.
