The line was crossed when the courts 1) allowed Trump to skate and not be held accountable for his theft of documents and for his attempt to steal the 2020 election, and 2) when SCOTUS gave him immunity from anything they determine is okay.
Throw in 3)When SCOTUS decided that the fourteen amendment, although clearly barring Trump from ever holding public office again, would be a big hassle to enforce, so, never mind on that one.
