I firmly believe that a master's degree is not necessary to be a teacher. Create a teacher track bachelor degree that includes subject matter concentration with pedagogy, classroom management, etc. New teachers get a one year internship, at the end of which they must pass certification exams.

Required to take certification exams (Praxis), & we all have to do student teaching in our pedagogy (unpaid). My M.Ed. brought my salary up 20k per year in public school districts. It's necessary if you want to work only one job. Regardless, training does not prepare teachers for real life bs.

I get it. But I don't get it. A bachelor level degree should be worth that 20k. I just think the cost of a master's degree isn't necessary. Teacher salaries should remain the same, but without the expense of a master's. In the UK, doctors and lawyers earn a degree in 4 years.

Agree. The pay doesn't equate to the demand of the job. Europeans are better people than us. They value education, healthcare, & helping their citizens. Got my mlMasters in 2014; 6k left on all my loans. Yes, I'm glad I have it to set myself apart from others, but no, I wouldn't do it again.

So glad you are a teacher, though. My partner went through the expense of a master's degree to teach. My sister's husband in the UK did a 4 year degree to be a lawyer and is now a multi millionaire. It's not fair.

I don't teach k-12 anymore. No thanks! I had enough. The admin, parents, & the kids. Time/money/effort/lack of safety, wasn't worth summers off when I would cry for weeks. I always said if I wasn't happy, I wasn't going to stay. That day came & I finally walked away. I'm never going back there.

We need to put this on the ballot to change payroll.

Masters in Special Education & my CA district only paid $1,000 more annually. Requirements are that you have to take more classes to keep your SPED certification within 5 years or lose it so most take the additional 2-3 classes & get a Masters.Lots required/expected for not great pay.Loved the kids!

Both my parents were educators. I remember my mother coming home from school and working on lesson plans until 8:30-9:00PM when we had to go to bed. These are good, caring people. What will become of our country if there is no reverence for knowledge and education?

the districts are dysfunctional. maybe because everyone who works there is spread thin trying to turn the schools into community centers. let the teachers teach, then send the kids home. it was a better model.

We’ve got some f!cked up priorities in this country. Teachers are a national treasure.
