I think we forget that American society was founded on stupidity. It is only recently in the last century or so, that we really laid into the idea of pragmatic science. Before that, we had a President who died of infection despite disinfectant being around. This is just one example.

I miss him all around. I still remember how he walked in to testify before Congress in his very natty suit, carrying a briefcase, and looking as scholarly as any quantum physics professor - I think every other person present had to pick their jaw off the floor. Zappa was something else.
