One of the most important things Democrats can do post-Trump is to revive, not merely rebuild, the career civil service. Not just to return it to where it was in January 19, 2025, but to where we need it to be on January 19, 2050 and beyond.

Your statement applies across the board! When we fight the Trump Regime's widespread destruction of federal programs and norms, Democrats must not seek merely to recover the status quo (whose flaws led to the rise of MAGA) but to strive for the progressive reforms that inspire grassroots activism.
The problem is the democrats don’t have the desire to govern in a decisive manner. Their unwillingness to really do anything about J6 doesn’t fill me with hope.
Is there anyone in the party establishment working on answers to those questions? Is there anyone in the party establishment even asking those questions?
I don't know about the party establishment but @thepeoplelab.bsky.social is certainly are asking and aiming to answer those questions!
We should connect soon. I'm building out work on this.
I would support @donmoyn.bsky.social or @pamherd.bsky.social for OPM Director in the next admin.
And, obviously, civil society has a role to play here, too. The first step is to abandon the pipe dream that meaningful civil service reform can be or must be a "bipartisan" endeavor. This will require ambition, vision, and commitment from the funding community. Do we have that? If not, why not?
I have 2 Democratic Senators and a Democratic House Rep - none of them are talking about this in a meaningful way. One Senator talks about programs for Veterans but that is it. One of the Senators is retiring in 2026, not one candidate for his seat has mentioned fed employees.
Same deal here. I was wondering if you were in my district in Nevada until you mentioned a "he" as a senator.
Illinois - the 10th District DEM Rep is a proud Blue Dog who is still talking about making government more efficient and effective and working across the aisle with Republicans. Despite have a large population of federal employees, his office has never posted resources during a gov’t shut down.
Yeah, Tina Smith was probably identified as female at birth...
Another reason to revive the civil service is to prevent hacks like this from degrading the critical work that we need government to do bsky.app/profile/bren...
