I haven't bought a thing from Target since January, and it seems like my fellow Americans have cut back their spending there, too.

same! Target is very much replaceable
Same
I haven't spent a penny there in months, and tbh I don't really miss it.
I've saved a good amount not having a weekly "Target run" & I don't miss it much either. The only time I do is when I'm looking for something specific and when I Google it, the cutest ones are there. Pisses me off even more.😏
I don't really have one near me, but I'd occasionally go in one for something and come out a few hundred dollars lighter and that hasn't happened since.
This is, I think, the key. Same experience at our house. I was stunned, frankly, how quickly I stopped thinking “Damn, I don’t want to go to Target, where will I get X?” Even saying “we are boycotting Target” seems wrong now because it doesn’t even seem like we are doing anything.
I know this is not the case and not even possible for all households, but as this story shows, it doesn’t have to be all households.
It's refreshing to see that this boycott was actually carried out. There's so many companies whose products are easily replaceable with no significant life impact (X, for example, especially with BlueSky) & if we boycotted bad behavior more often, other companies would take note.
is this the result of a boycott or just changed habits? Department stores of all kinds are seeing a huge decline in shoppers since Covid taught us to shop from home.
sales were taking a dip ever since they locked everything behind plexiglass, but there’s been a much steeper decline since January
I’m actively boycotting them.
same. i’ve gone there a total of 2? times since january and each time i felt bad 😭 and that’s just because finding any retailer that sells C&H brown sugar anymore (at least in north texas) is like winning the lottery 😭 it’s all my family uses
Me too.
If you really think that is the case, look at Costco. Target removed DEI as a priority to the public. Costco doubled down on DEI as a priority to the public.
I used to shop primarily from Target's website as I loved their kid's clothes. No more.
It's always worth looking at all angles but from the articles I've read after Target's capitulation to cranks the data definitely shows that, even for accounting for the other factors you've mentioned, the boycotts have had an impact.
The reason why they were marketing to minorities in the first place is to give them a USP. They did things like support small Black, LGBTQ and women-owned businesses that gave their stock more variety than the usual crap from China. Then they decided to go back on that and suddenly had no USP.
Anecdotally I live in a blue city and dozens upon dozens of my friends were regular shoppers. I was too. Only one still goes & mostly bc she's limited by transportation. The rest of us all have ample alternatives we make use of.
Boycotts, yes, but also costs. These companies sell out our country for greed, then act shocked when the economy tanks and people have to cut back on unnecessary purchases.
My decline with Target has been ongoing for years; they simply have less stuff that I like--my local store, anyway. You raise a good point.
IMHO it's the boycott. They have a great online site. Before the boycott, I rarely stepped inside except to return something. I spent $200-400/month. I have only been inside the store since because that's where my CVS pharmacy is. Otherwise, nothing since Jan.
That’s what I used to love about Target. Their online selection and super fast mostly free (for me) shipping. I almost never went into a store.
They were my first stop before Amazon when I couldn't find something locally. My heart broke when they laid down for fascists. They have so much to make up for.
In my case, an active boycott. I haven't bought anything at a Target for several months now. It does not appear that I'm the only one.
We boycotted completely and I used to spend hundreds there a month - we bought everything from Target at one point
In my case a boycott
I guess it's both. If every big chain is feeling the pinch it's the perfect time for us to kill off the ones that deserve it.
I think as math goes it's probably both, but businesses with business models already in decline are less able to absorb even small actions that push them further.
Boycott for me
It’s definitely boycott + years old trend + bad marketing. Since the boycott began we’ve seen no real response to it beyond thinking it’ll pass.
Both mostly changed habits. But a percentage point or two for boycott adds up
Im not shopping there, Walmart or Amazon either. Fuck them.
This boycott was organized by Black churches. It's way more powerful than just the Tesla and Amazon boycotts that people are doing piecemeal.
