So if I am reading this correctly I have been lied to my whole life. They didn't indict the ham sandwich.

That was a rookie mistake by the prosecutors. They tried to indict the man who threw it rather than the sandwich

As someone who spent 18-months on a federal grand jury, I find this shocking, but it's reassuring because this is literally what grand juries are for.
