In my opinion, it isn't Putin's fantasy, it's Putin's PLAN, having been implemented since 2015 when he began to work diligently on installing Trump as President. And as Lev Parnas said, "Putin is Trump's mentor." If Trump was working for Putin, what would he have done different than what he's done?
