Humans have proven time and again throughout history that they'd rather be controlled and told what to do/think over having freedom. Democracy will always exist but never endure. It will always take place in fleeting pockets between fascism and imperialism.

" is it already too late?" No. Democracy in one form or another has been around for millennia. We have the recipes / models / templates, and can rebuild if necessary. The pendulum of history seems to swing from democracy to feudalism or dictatorships and back. Within my lifetime? Possibly not.
