The Bulwark @thebulwark.com

Drawing down our presence in Europe to focus on the Indo-Pacific would reflect a recurring American error: our repeatedly misplaced confidence that we can predict the next war and optimize for it in advance. ICYMI @markhertling.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/withdrawin...

I wonder if Putin whispered this idea into Trump's ear. It sounds like a Putin dream, with a willing co-conspirator.

If you're going to sign up for any Bulwark content, Mark Hertling is the place to put your money. For those who seek a no nonsense discourse in that clipped military communication style, which delivers the facts on the ground necessary to command an army of a superpower

IF there is a China / Pacific / Taiwan / Asia war. THEN There will also almost certainly be some simultaneous attack on Europe by Russia & others. [Note: North Korea is already involved in a prototype of this]

Europe is already at war. If Russia escalates by opening another front, China might blockade and/or invade Taiwan.

Europe is unlikely to get involved. It has its hands full with Russia, China, North Korea, and the USA.

Backing away from a fight we can win with a country that needs defeating, to take on a fight we probably can't win with a country we rely on. Sounds like a MAGA move.

Russia is not USSR & Ukraine can stop Russia with some help, and EUrope need to stand on its own, hence US, who support in a war is doubtful anyway, is not needed nor wanted in Europe.

The US shouldn’t completely withdraw but they need to close some bases and shift focus to China. Europe can handle Russia. Taiwan can’t handle China. And I worry about Chinese aggression towards Japan.

Europe is quite strong but has some significant weaknesses. Air tankers, AWACS & capacity to kill Russian radars. Much better logistics & ammunition capacity needed. Better coordinated leadership?

I wonder who would benefit from a US withdrawal from Europe? Oh well, I’m sure Trump and Hegseth have really given this some deep thought.

Weren't we drawing down in Europe back during Bush Jr to focus on the Middle East? Wasn't that a thing? How'd that work out?

Perhaps it’s easier to predict a war when you’re running the “department of war” rather than the department of defense.

Things are different now. At this point the success of our military depends to a disturbing degree on the whims of a drunken Sec Def, a ketamine fueled car salesman, a Russian despot and an orange buffoon. We can’t even be sure US forces in Europe wouldn’t be ordered to shoot at Europeans.

1. Expect multi-front war. May have attacks against USA as well. We could spend $400 billion a year less on military and be safer. We waste trillions on weapon systems, foreign military bases we do not while refusing to give soldiers what they need to win www.mlive.com/opinion/musk...

2 Vietnam fought with USA against Japan. Democrats chose to murder babies in Vietnam with Resolution Authorizing Force which is not constitutional. Democrats used chemical warfare against people of Vietnam and our soldiers. Saudi Arabia attacked USA on 9/11. Iraq did not.

3 USA did a genocide in Iraq with resolution authorizing force. genocide definition - when you murder people in cold blood who have caused you no harm example - Christian knights on the way to Middle East murdered Jews in cold blood who caused them no harm

4 There were no Air Marshal flying domestically on planes on 9/11. Congress refused to harden cockpits. FAA in 1990s said as airplane and airport security improves the threat posed to planes by surface to air missiles is likely to increase. Think Firebombing of Germany WW2
