I'm genuinely curious to see what they'll do if he dies in office. Do they go for a "family and friends only" style funeral, or do they go full state funeral and risk a repeat of his birthday?

I think they will do a Weekend with Bernie thing for as long as possible. Then they will have him temporarily incapacitated and put JD in power. When people are getting used to that, they will announce his demise and perform a fake funeral, while having buried him in a secret place long ago.
