This is a great conference! I attended the inaugural conference last spring and it was a wonderful experience--cool ideas, constructive and chill conversations, and well-run! Consider submitting for this Spring!!

Beyond the conference, you may have an opportunity to witness some of the most well-fed (or very pregnant) campus squirrels I've ever encountered
I can't believe this is the first I'm hearing of this. but yes, lots of big and well-fed squirrels!!
Michigan colleges are known for their campus squirrels! I remember there was a very active undergrad squirrel feeding club at UM.
my mother was enthralled at the diversity and size of the squirrels when she visited over the summer!!

There is definitely something about midwestern squirrels. Just recently @leecarpenter.bsky.social made a comment about Minneapolis squirrels. The squirrels in my OH hometown are also notably large (and occasionally albino).
There is absolutely a difference! Arguably not quite the midwest, but the squirrels at Western Kentucky University are the biggest, often albino, squirrels I've seen anywhere.
Minneapolis squirrels are basically graceful woodchucks.
I love the unexpected bluesky squirrel discourse today. Truly 10/10, no notes, thank you all for participating.

Lemme introduce you to Blackavar, mister smarty squirrel who loves our BirdBuddy. I think he's singlehandedly responsible for the coloration of squirrels in our neighborhood.
Please respond to more of my posts with this sort of discussion.
Noted. Will do. I so very rarely post anything here, because I find myself listening and learning and unsure of whether I have anything to contribute. I have a lot to contribute to discussions about small midwestern animals though.
Nah, post more. I haven't had anything substantive to contribute aside from shenanigans and gifs, and I've been talking law stuff for over a decade.
this is a much richer conversation than I imagined would take place in response to Michael's post. and people say Bluesky is dying!
I saw a squirrel the size of an infant jump from a roof to a tree last night. I initially thought it was a raccoon. I really think we need to check the water.
The squirrels in Kansas are just . . . unremarkable. Unnoteworthy in every way. The size of squirrels seems to be an important dividing line between Great Lakes Midwest and Great Plains Midwest. I welcome your thoughts on this important matter.
Clearly we need a squirrel mapping project. Surely some academic will take this on.
i can think of some fat cat investors who could provide seed/acorn funding
I moved from Nebraska to Minnesota as a kid and distinctly remember remarking to my parents that Nebraska's red squirrels were much smaller. I think you're on to something.
Mid-Atlantic squirrels make up for their average size by being utterly shameless. We once put 3 dozen peanut butter cookies on the deck to cool and within an hour the squirrels had stolen ALL OF THEM.
