“Most” western media is not “actually just covering stories popular in the chinese mediasphere”. There’s some crossover (like with every single country) but, in China’s case, the majority of what I report is blocked from being mentioned in the “Chinese mediasphere”.
It’s a good thing that a lot of western news stories have origins in Chinese media, Stephen. It helps to fight accusations of propaganda. I saw people calling this ‘pay to work’ article “typical made-up BS by the BBC”. Clearly they don’t know that it’s also been reported on in China.
Being able to link to a Chinese article on the same topic often shuts them up, makes them realize their ignorance and that there’s a whole Chinese media landscape they don’t read, and also shows them that the BBC has credibility as the story is corroborated by a source they can’t really dispute.
That’s not what China Law Translate said. There is no way that “most” Western media reports originate in the heavily censored Chinese media, when so much of what we report on (including entire subject areas) is blocked in the Chinese media.
Oh jeez. I agree it's not most of course-- just responded quickly from my phone. I also don't think it's a bad thing to acknowledge Chinese media stories- even if it shares a last name with the Party. FWIW I also don't think the 'pretend to work' story is newsworthy inside or outside of China.
Well you have to be careful what you’re writing, especially when you are quote posting what others say. As for the story in question, it would be newsworthy in any country in the world.
