Maybe the contract for the first movie had an option that required the actors to do the second. Otherwise, it's hard to understand why someone with Charlize Theron's standing didn't push back. She's shown such good taste in the scripts she accepts.

Money. And Charlize Theron, Hollywood, female, in her forties, I doubt that you can be picky in that situation regarding the jobs you get.
