There was me thinking the road network had been crippled by the privatisation of buses and railways causing people to either drive because there’s no bus to their destination or making it more expensive to go by train than it is by car 🤷♀️
Ukrainian guests who arrived a month were told by the Job Centre ‘You need a car if you want a job’ (Yeovil, Somerset). Not quite true IMHO but certainly if you live in any of the nearby villages. Our tiny bus hourly, doesn’t start until 8.30am, is slow, gap at school’s out, last bus 5.30pm.
Similar here in the heart of Sussex. Train service is OK but buses from one village/town to another are few and far between. There are school buses for the senior school kids in the surrounding villages, but it’s a long day for those at the beginning and end of pick-up/drop-off 1/2
The primary schools have a lot of kids arriving by car because whenever new housing is built no one bothers to include planning for proper paths along roadsides leading to it being far too dangerous to walk them in 😬 2/2
And the rest of the infrastructure like local GP surgery, shop. Much-maligned Milton Keynes is actually a success in that there are lots of buses, safe cycle routes, paths with underpasses. Playgrounds do now get built. I am going to ask my local councillor friend about paths in new developments.
My mum lives in Stevenage. It sounds similar to Milton Keynes: much of it is carved up by busy roads but there are lots of connected, safe, cycle paths and walkways. It feels as though most forms of getting from A to B have bern catered for. Lots of green space and playgrounds too.
Wouldn’t particularly want to live in MK but brother in law & family have for years & it has been v good for the kids, and a large Ukrainian family we know well moved there last year & marvelled how easy it was for the kids to get around, and easy train to London.
