Ahh the old "if we don't do it, someone else will" gambit. That's almost as bad the the "But China!" cries. If we didn't approve NWS, or at the very least actually charged some royalties for it, that would change the cost competitiveness of gas and help push countries away from it

We do charge royalties, WA get 12.5%, and the Federal government gets 10%. Woodside paid around $5 billion in royalties in 2024. Tax was on around $600 million, and it should be more. Hopely, increasing royalties is part of the deal.
