They should ban any player from pushing a player with the ball, period. Now when the Fridge carried the ball for the Bears. That was fun, funny and entertaining

I want to see more than one team utilize this effectively at the same clip as Philly before this is deemed an unbeatable play that must be prevented. If it’s so good, you would have expected more than one team last year to use it.

Except teams still did it when it's was against the rules. It's very hard to call. Plus this rule wouldn't ban paying the ball carrier, it would specifically ban only the way the eagles do it

Let’s hope so-it’s called common sense. A 200 pound qb lowers his head and dives under a group of 5-6 huge bodies averaging 300 pounds each. Just imagine if just one of those bodies come down on the qb’s head are neck stuck between other bodies

avatar
pierogi44.bsky.social @pierogi44.bsky.social

Mmmm, no. Those plays don't have people pushing the runner. If pushing is ok for offense then they need to allow people being pushed for FG blocks and on Defense. Currently that's illegal. Stop "aiding the runner".. which used to be illegal. Or allow aiding a player universally.

Different case. You cannot push a pass rusher to get through line. You cannot push someone to block a kick through the line. But you can push as much as you want to sid the ball carrier. That makes sense. Nothing to do w tackling.

There was also no reason to change the rule that allows it, either.

mar 28, 2025, 2:00 pm • 8 0 • view
avatar
DivacPhys @divacphys.bsky.social

Yes there was, it was never called, and very hard to officiate. The refs were the ones who asked the rule to be taken away. But this rule is not the same as the one that was repealed 20 years ago.

mar 28, 2025, 3:00 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Justin @jro27.bsky.social

The general concept of pushing a ball carrier forward is what was changed - which is all the tush push is. Pulling is also tough to spot and rarely called. Yet that rule stuck around.

mar 28, 2025, 3:26 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
DivacPhys @divacphys.bsky.social

Pulling is much easier to spot. It was the refs who requested the push rule be removed. And the packets don't want to put the rule back in. They're fine with pushing the ball carrier, they just want to specifically ban the way the eagles do it.

mar 28, 2025, 3:34 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Justin @jro27.bsky.social

Pushing, especially w/ this play, is quite easy to spot. It's also incredibly easy to spot when a pile is being pushed- when a RB would otherwise clearly be stopped. As for your argument about GB specifically targeting this play, I get it. I'd just be in favor of the whole act being banned.

mar 28, 2025, 3:38 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
DivacPhys @divacphys.bsky.social

Referees are on record as specifically saying pushing a ball carrier is hard to spot. That's the whole reason the rule was done away with

mar 28, 2025, 5:17 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
Justin @jro27.bsky.social

Referees occasionally missing a call is not a valid reason to remove the rule entirely.

mar 28, 2025, 7:50 pm • 1 0 • view
avatar
DivacPhys @divacphys.bsky.social

Not occasionally. Consistently, so much so that the refs as a whole decided to stop calling it. And didn't call it for years until the league finally removed the rule. And again that was over 20 years ago. What's changed in the 20+ years since the rule was removed?

mar 28, 2025, 8:19 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Justin @jro27.bsky.social

What's changed is an escalation over the past number of years, causing most plays to look like a rugby scrum. Again, it isn't just this specific play. It's all of it. It has clearly escalated. To me, it's like carrying in the NBA. Do Refs call it? No. But if you get rid of it, it'll get worse.

You only ban the tush push if you don’t like how the NFL games will look if all the teams adopt it or real safety concerns, I think Centers should embrace it and make it why they jump to one of the highest paid positions 😀
