Micah Parsons will wear No. 1 as he starts fresh in Green Bay. @mattschneidman.bsky.social has more from Parsons' introduction ⤵️ www.nytimes.com/athletic/658...

Nope. The #Packers should retire number 1 in honor of Curly Lambeau and Vince Lombardi, the only two men to date who have worn it during a game.

Yes.Curly Lambeau wore a variety of numbers as a player. The stadium is named after him, and there’s a huge statue of the man at the stadium entrance. Micah is our Number 1 now. But I appreciate the concern from New York. 👍

I’m a Packers stockholder. My family has had season tickets since the 1940s. He doesn’t deserve that number. Yet. Maybe someday he will.

How did Lombardi wear #1 in a game for the Packers…

The players were issued cold weather gear with their numbers on them, for identification. Vince’s number was 1. I did say “during a game”.

Just as the players’ gear had their numbers on it, so too was Lombardi issued a number for his. Vince celebrating the Ice Bowl win. Check out the hat.

Interesting. Appreciate the info, but would say this is pretty immaterial since he was a coach

The point remains - number one should have been retired a long time ago, for the men who wore it.

Disagree. Curly has the stadium named after him, a statue in front of said stadium, name in the Ring of Honor, & dozens of other acknowledgements in the organization. But most importantly—he wore at least three other numbers. Numbers just weren’t that important back then.

If the Packers had ever assigned that number to a player, I’d agree with you. But they had a unique opportunity to do the right thing, and failed to. The Packers continue to be mediocre stewards of their own history.

What “right thing” did the #Packers fail to do here? Fans file into Lambeau Field past a huge statue of Curly Lambeau to watch Parsons wear jersey no. 1. Random guy online: “The Packers just don’t honor Curly Lambeau enough.”

It’s not about not honoring him enough, Random guy online. It’s about not elevating random players to the level of Curly or Vince.

Note that they waited for Lambeau to die before they named the field after him. Curly wasn’t god. He didn’t own the team and tried to move it to LA.
