It's not as if humans are innately drawn to petty jabs like moths to a flame. They chose to gravitate towards them. The reckoning shouldn't be with Newsom, Trump, or pettiness in general: it needs to be a reckoning for voters. They dug themselves into this, they need to dig themselves out of it.
