don’t have kids so don’t know much about this — if you’ve ever had a baby registry, what did you hope for the most from it? I know obvs she wants it in general if it’s on there but there’s a lot of stuff available and I want to get what’s most crucial for her

Diapers and wipes for sure. If you’re a Costco person that’s probably better price per item than wherever they’re registered. If you’re looking for a pure luxury item, the baby breeza formula dispenser was a life saver for us when the twins were born.
It’s been a while and being a dude my advice is limited, but I used the following all the time with both kids: white noise machine, a boppy, and any of the ‘strap the baby to your body so you can still use both hands’ carriers that are available.

If it’s a first time parent, stuff like furniture, bottles, clothes. If it’s not their first child, clothes primarily. Always size up (buy 6-12 month clothing because the child will outgrow newborn immediately and everyone loves buying cute newborn onesies) And Diapers, always
I always do the size up thing cos having way younger siblings did teach me some of this stuff lol
I was always sad when we were gifted cute clothes but my daughter and son both grew way fast and they couldn't wear them anymore. But above all else, anything you get from the registry will be greatly appreciated by the parents! I don't think there is a wrong choice.

Diapers. Aside from the big ticket items car seat, stroller etc, Everything else useless shit she won’t actually use.
First 3 months: Diapers, diaper cream, *GOOD* bottles and formula if not 100% breastfeeding, onesies, swaddle blankets, burp cloths, bath set, infant nail clippers, comb/brush. **Lansinoh cream for mom.** That's all you NEED. Important larger items: Crib, tub, convertible stroller/carseat combo.
However: Most people will load new parents up with all the "newborn" stuff and forget that the baby's going to outgrow all of it with a quickness. So you might want to buy a bunch of 3-6mo clothing, Stage 1 diapers, a Boppy gym/mat and soft toys/rattles for floor/tummy time, etc.
But if you go with the 3+ month stuff (which will be VERY appreciated when the newborn wardrobe no longer fits) STILL GET THE LANSINOH CREAM FOR MOM she doesn't know she needs it but TRUST ME, she does!!
A nice bouncy chair or something like that can always buy parents some much needed time for chores or personal time. Super important.
Couple things that saved my life as a young dad were a sound machine, and we got this vibrating owl that we could put with her in her car seat or swing. It would calm her and help her fall asleep.
This is my go-to gift. It’s great as a travel crib and if you get the bassinet kit it great for right after the baby is born. Don’t know budget but can split between 3-4 ppl www.guavafamily.com

Came here to say this. But always a safe bet to do whatever is most expensive from a registry (or most you can spend on something). Because if people don’t get it for them, they’ll have to buy them themselves.
Has anyone mentioned onesies in multiple sizes? Babies live in them and grow fast. You can personalize by embroidering the name or get something funky.
