The EU's plans to beef up its defense are a potential threat to Russia, which might be forced to take countermeasures, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said today according to Russian media.

It seems to me that US military bases in EU need to be reviewed urgently. The bases were installed for our protection against hostile countries (Russia). If the US is no longer to be relied upon (or worse) the bases should become EU controlled.

It's quite telling that Peskov (a seasoned politician with decent knowledge of the EU) uses such a phrasing. The EU has been a military alliance since 1992, and stricter than NATO at that. Peskov can't ignore this fact. So he uses calibrated phrasing to give the impression that this is somehow new.

mar 7, 2025, 2:21 pm • 6 1 • view
avatar
Jean-Baptiste Perrin @alphast.bsky.social

Of course, what's new is that the EU is taking itself and its defense "pillar" more seriously. And putting the money that had always lacked under the treaty commitments. But none of this is a real threat to Russia. The nature of the EU hasn't changed, only its means.

^^ you can see above a classic attempt at distorsion of facts. The "post truth" in all its abjection. Presenting the EU ability to protect itself against the Russian expansionism as a "bloodlust". It's highly emotional, made to provoke knee jerk response but devoid of facts, context or logic.

If there is a "threat" to Moscow, it's only a threat to the Russian capacity to attack its neighbours without fearing negative consequences or retaliation. It's no threat to the Putin's regime in Moscow, nor to the Russian population or territory. Just to their colonialist agressive ambitions.
